Egyptian hieroglyphics show huge blocks of stone used to build the pyramids being transported by sliding them on tree trunks acting as bearings. Another early example of the use of ball bearings has been dated back to 40 BC with the retrieval of a Roman ship found in Lake Nemi, Italy. It was discovered that wooden balls were used to support a rotating platform.
