Interview Questions of Current Transformer

What exactly is a current transformer?

It is an instrument transformer used to reduce current levels for metering and protection.

What is the primary distinction between a current transformer and a unit transformer?

CTs are really step up transformers with lower VA ratings than power transformers used in power plants.

What are the variations in construction between a CT and a unit transformer?

The primary winding of a CT is only one turn (wire), whereas the primary winding of a unit transformer has a set number of turns. CTs have secondary windings with varying turns depending on the line's load.

Is there a distinction to be made between LV and HV current transformers?

Because the current on the LV side is greater than the current on the HV side, low voltage (LV) side CTs have more turns than high voltage (HV) side CTs.

Is there a common current value on the secondary side of CTs?

The usual current values on the secondary of CTs are 5A, 2A, and 1A. 5A CTs are used at GEPCO.

Is there a distinction between the metering CT and the protection CT?

The VA rating (burden) of metering CTs is lower than that of protection CTs. The higher the VA rating, the higher the CT saturation point, also known as the knee point voltage (KPV). To get saturated, protection CTs require more voltage than metering CTs.
